Application-Report – Legends on Wheels go electric

University Esslingen:

Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is one of the leading universities of applied sciences in Germany. It provides academic education in the fields of technology, business and social sciences. Excellent teaching combined with a high proportion of practical experience is a top priority at the university. The university is also strong in applied research. No wonder Esslingen is among the best universities in Germany in numerous rankings.

Task:

Esslingen University of Applied Sciences is working on simplifying the electrification of youngtimer vehicles in order to be able to implement electromobility not only with newly built vehicles. The beautiful vehicles from the 1990s (including the BMW Z3, Mercedes SLK, Porsche 986 and 996) are fully galvanized, safe and still far from the end of their life in terms of vehicle body. Up to now, conversions (combustion engine and tank out- electric motor and battery in) have only been possible with individual approval by a few TÜV specialists, which is beyond the cost and time frame for those who might be interested.

Solution:

The university is therefore working on a conversion kit with general operating license, so that only special features such as special rims or a different exhaust design have to be registered with the TÜV. For high performance, many Tesla 3D3 drives (100kW, Model Y front axle) are now available, which can be installed in a Porsche 911 (996) as a replacement drive instead of the combustion engine, for example. However, the Tesla power electronics, which cannot be controlled directly, must be replaced by an inverter, which is common in the converter scene. To do this, the resolver built into the Tesla motor must be replaced with an incremental encoder for the highest speeds (up to 18000 rpm), as conventional converters do not have a resolver connection.
