Rotork electro-hydraulic actuator successfully installed at Spanish mountain range power plant

Service engineers from the Spanish office of Rotork installed an electro-hydraulic actuator at a hydro-electric plant in the heart of a Spanish mountain range, the company announced in a March 13 press release.

The Rotork Skilmatic actuator is being used to operate a critical butterfly valve installed on a pipeline feeding a power-plant turbine at the Repsol site, which is located high up in the Picos de Europa mountains.

The actuator was installed on the Naranjo de Bulnes peak, which reaches a summit of 2,518 metres (about 8,261 feet) above sea level, in Camarmena, an area in the northern Spanish principality of Asturias, according to the press release.

The site’s height and access difficulties made the installation difficult. Rotork credited the work of its service engineers from its Spanish office in overcoming the challenges.

Rotork said its SI actuators offer a reliable way to carry out analogue control for both quarter-turn and linear valves and dampers. The actuators combine the simplicity of electrical operation with hydraulic precision and the reliability of spring-return or accumulator fail-safe action, the company said.
